Making the most of the sight you have

When glasses alone can no longer give you the vision you need, the right support and equipment can make a real difference to everyday life – reading, watching television, managing at home, keeping up hobbies and staying independent.

We are proud to be an accredited provider of the NHS Wales Low Vision Service, part of the Wales General Ophthalmic Services. It is a free, NHS-funded service, delivered by specially accredited practitioners, and you can come to us directly – there is no need to be referred by your GP or the hospital.

What happens at a low vision assessment?

Your assessment usually lasts about an hour. We start with what matters most: the things you want and need to do. We then assess how you use your vision in practice, including your distance and near vision, contrast sensitivity and visual fields.

Based on what we find, we can recommend low vision aids to help – such as magnifiers and specialist lighting. Everything is provided on loan, completely free of charge, and we make sure whatever you take home actually works for the tasks you care about.

Just as importantly, we connect you to the wider help available: social services, voluntary organisations such as the RNIB, education and employment support, and the Hospital Eye Service where registration as Sight Impaired or Severely Sight Impaired may be appropriate. Accredited low vision practitioners in Wales can also certify sight impairment where the cause is dry age-related macular degeneration.
