Dry eyes

Dry eyes

Uncomfortable, sore or itchy eyes? You may be suffering from dry eye syndrome.

Dry eye is very common. It happens when your eyes do not produce enough tears, or when there is a problem with the quality of the tears. The condition tends to be more common in women and in people over 65.

Dry eyes are uncomfortable but not usually clinically serious. Left unmanaged, though, the condition can occasionally lead to complications such as extreme light sensitivity, very red and painful eyes, or changes to your vision.

There is no outright cure, but there are effective treatments and techniques that reduce the discomfort. We are experienced in helping people with dry eyes: we examine for the underlying causes, help you manage the symptoms, and let you know if the problem needs medical treatment.

Common symptoms

  • Itchy, sore or burning eyes
  • A gritty feeling
  • Redness
  • Blurry vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Eyes more watery than normal (it sounds contradictory, but it is a classic sign)

How we help

  • Examination to identify the underlying causes
  • Personalised advice and treatment options
  • Ongoing help managing symptoms and discomfort
